Making Essex safer, greener and healthier
We’re developing cycling and walking networks across Essex and would now like to hear from residents in Basildon, Castle Point, Rochford and Witham. Are the routes we’ve identified broadly correct? Are any key routes missing? What are the key issues in these areas? Please click on the link further down this page to access the survey and give us your feedback – the survey is open until 15th January 2024.
This consultation follows the one held recently for Braintree, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Colchester. A report on what we found out will be published shortly.
These cycling and walking networks are called Local Cycling Walking and Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) which are evidence-led, long-term plans to help identify cycling, walking, and wheeling improvements at the local level as set out in the Government’s Gear Change 2020 report available to read here.
They’re important as they help us identify key walking and cycling routes used by residents to connect to places such as schools, workplaces and shops.
We want to encourage everyone in Essex to travel sustainably - walk, cycle or use public transport - rather than automatically jumping into cars, especially for shorter journeys. By designing and building more infrastructure that creates healthy streets and encourages cycling and walking, Essex residents will have more choice and gain health benefits through reduced congestion and better air quality. New infrastructure can also help residents save money when other costs continue to increase and make the roads less busy for those who have to use it.
