Overview
Metacognition and Memory
This course is about maximising the learning of all pupils, including those with SEND.
It will apply up-to-date research to support the practical development of pupils’ metacognition and memory.
This training will enable participants to:
- develop their understanding of metacognition, and how to model effective metacognitive strategies throughout teaching;
- support pupils to use effective metacognitive strategies to enhance their own learning;
- develop understanding of different types of memory, with particular reference to working memory;
- use more effective memory strategies throughout teaching and learning, including metamemory development;
- know how to identify and support pupils who present with memory difficulties;
- plan how to strategically implement this content in their setting.

This course will be run virtually. Details of how to join the online training will be emailed to participants who have booked, prior to the training days.
Dates and times
Participants must be able to attend all 3 dates for their chosen term's course, as the sessions each give new information and build on each other:
- Part 1: Thursday 2 May 2024 – 9am to 12 midday
- Part 2: Thursday 9 May 2024 – 9am to 12 midday
- Part 3: Thursday 13 June 2024 – 9am to 12 midday
Who is this course for? School senior leadership team members, SENCos. We are unable to offer places to Learning Support Assistants, Teaching Assistants, or those who are not qualified teachers.
