Overview

Course Overview

We want all children and young people in Essex to:

  • have high quality literacy teaching;
  • have their individual needs identified and met early on, if they have literacy difficulties despite appropriate learning opportunities;
  • get the help they need to make progress in literacy.

This course is designed to enable all Essex schools to:

  • be up-to-date with current research-based practice on effective teaching of literacy for all pupils, including those with literacy difficulties;
  • be familiar with the research-based Essex Literacy Practice Guidance, and know how to implement this in their setting. This includes addressing questions around dyslexia;
  • ensure that their school has effective literacy assessment in place, including the Essex Accuracy and Fluency Assessment of Literacy Skills (AFALS);
  • ensure that their school has effective evidence-based literacy intervention in place to support children who have literacy difficulties.

Who is this course for?

School senior leadership team members, SENCos, Literacy Coordinators/Leads, Heads of English (secondary). To ensure effective joined-up working in schools it is strongly recommended that both the SENCO and the lead for Literacy/English attend together. We are unable to offer places to Learning Support Assistants or those who are not qualified teachers.
