Overview

A small number of health procedures increase the risk of transmission of COVID 19 through aerosols (tiny droplets). These are known as aerosol generating procedures (AGPs). Staff performing AGPs in home and community settings should follow Public Health England’s personal protective equipment (PPE) guidance on aerosol generating procedures, and wear the correct PPE.

Types of AGPs

PPE required for undertaking AGPs

  • Oral and Nasal Suctioning
  • Care of a Tracheostomy / tracheostomy ventilation
  • Non-invasive ventilation known as CPAP and BiPAP (mask ventilation)
  • Nebulised saline via a compressor
  • High flow nasal oxygen

  • FFP2/3 mask /respirator
  • gloves
  • long-sleeved fluid repellent gown
  • eye protection (goggle / visor)

TABLE A

Staff undertaking AGPs will be required to wear a respirator and this must be fitted correctly (known as ‘fit testing’) by an individual trained to do this. They must also be trained in the putting on and removal of PPE known as ‘donning and doffing’.

To enable us to support you with accessing the required training and specific personal protective equipment (PPE) for performing AGPs please complete the following short questionnaire
